Fetal (Animated Short)

Written, directed, and animated by Arvin Bautista, the original version of Fetal was made in 2000-2001 as a high school animation project. Among the stylistic inspirations for this film include Bill Plympton (we watched him a lot in class), and Pearl Jam’s Do the Evolution music video directed by Todd McFarlane.

At the risk of revealing how ghetto this production was, each frame was originally done straight up paper, pen, and colored pencil (with the help of several unwitting assistants), scanned frame by frame, composed as an animated gif, and then converted into an movie file. Years later it would be reedited with rights-cleared music, updated credits/titles (in Adobe Flash), and cleaned up in AfterEffects.

Fetal has screened at numerous film festivals, winning awards at the United States Super 8 Film + Digital Video Festival, the Nashville Independent Film Festival, and the New Jersey Young Film and Videomakers Festival. It also participated for three seasons of Famecast, an online competition, placing 2nd, 8th, and 5th place each time (watch Arvin Bautista being interviewed about the film in the Famecast season 2 finals, held in Austin, TX).
